The good news? You don’t need a completely new wardrobe or designer clothing to look amazing. Whether we’re wandering through downtown Calgary, chasing golden light in the foothills, or hiking into the mountains for your engagement session, these tips will help you feel confident, comfortable, and completely yourselves.

As someone who specializes in couples photography in Calgary and throughout Southern Alberta, here’s everything I recommend before your engagement session.

What Should We Bring to Our Engagement Session?

Before we even talk about outfits, there are a few simple things you can bring (or do beforehand) that will make your session run smoothly.

Empty Your Pockets

Phones, wallets, keys, sunglasses, and bulky items create awkward bumps in your clothing that are difficult to edit later. Before we start, take a quick minute to empty your pockets.

Clean Your Engagement Ring

Your engagement ring deserves its moment to shine! I love capturing a few close-up photos throughout your session, so giving it a quick clean beforehand will make it sparkle beautifully in your images.

Bring Comfortable Shoes

If we’re hiking to a viewpoint, walking through a field, or exploring multiple locations, bring a comfortable pair of shoes for the walk. You can always change into your nicer shoes once we arrive at our destination.

Pack Lipstick, Hair Products & Touch-Up Items

Alberta weather can change in an instant, especially if we’re photographing in the mountains.

A few things I always recommend bringing include:

• Lipstick or lip balm
• Hairbrush
• Hairspray
• Bobby pins
• Powder (if you tend to get shiny)

A few quick touch-ups can make a huge difference throughout your session.

Arrive On Time

The most beautiful light happens during golden hour, and it doesn’t last long. Arriving a few minutes early allows us to make the most of that gorgeous evening light without feeling rushed.

Most Importantly… Relax!

Having your photo taken can feel intimidating—even if it’s just a quick iPhone photo from a friend. Almost every couple tells me they’re nervous before their session.

Absolutely!

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions I hear as a Calgary engagement photographer.

Many couples worry that neutral colours will wash them out, but in reality, neutrals are some of the most flattering colours you can wear for portraits.

Creams, beiges, taupes, soft browns, sage greens, dusty blues, and earthy tones photograph beautifully because they don’t compete with your faces. Instead, they complement Alberta’s natural landscapes and create a timeless look that won’t feel dated years from now.

If you’re dreaming of bright, romantic, airy images, wearing all black may not help achieve that look.

Instead, consider incorporating lighter neutrals or earth tones into your outfits. If you love black, try pairing it with cream, beige, or lighter accessories to soften the overall look.

The goal is to create balance while keeping the focus on the two of you.

Should We Match Our Outfits for Engagement Photos?

Short answer?

No.

Instead of matching, I always recommend coordinating.

Matching outfits—like identical white shirts and blue jeans—can feel dated and take away from the natural feeling of your images.

Instead, think of your outfits as one colour palette.

Coordinating creates a polished, effortless look while still allowing each of your personalities to shine through.

Does the Location Matter More Than Our Outfits?

Surprisingly, no.

Whether we’re photographing in downtown Calgary, the foothills, Fish Creek Park, Kananaskis, or Banff, your clothing has a much bigger impact on the overall feeling of your gallery than the location itself.

Your outfits help determine whether your photos feel:

Do We Need to Buy New Clothes for Engagement Photos?

Not at all.

In fact, some of my favourite engagement sessions have featured outfits couples already owned.

If you already have something that fits well, feels comfortable, and makes you feel confident, wear it.

Confidence always photographs better than expensive clothing.

Bringing two outfits gives your gallery much more variety.

I usually recommend one casual outfit that feels relaxed and authentic to your everyday selves, followed by a second outfit that’s slightly dressier.

This gives you plenty of variety for save-the-dates, your wedding website, wall art, and social media.

What Should We Wear During Each Season?

One of the best parts about couples photography in Calgary is that every season offers something completely different.

Spring

Think soft colours, light layers, flowing dresses, cream sweaters, and fresh greens that complement blooming landscapes.

Summer

Lightweight fabrics like linen and cotton work beautifully. Maxi dresses, short-sleeve button-ups, and breathable clothing will keep you comfortable while photographing during warm evenings.

Fall

Fall is one of my favourite times for engagement sessions!

Rust, camel, olive, cream sweaters, boots, and layered textures photograph beautifully against Alberta’s changing leaves.

Winter

Winter engagement sessions are magical.

Cozy knit sweaters, wool coats, scarves, neutral boots, and textured layers not only keep you warm but also add incredible depth and coziness to your images.
