If you’re dreaming of mountain engagement photos but want somewhere that feels a little more adventurous and less like the typical Banff locations, a Bighorn Lookout engagement session in Kananaskis is one of my favourite options near Calgary.
With sweeping mountain views, the Sheep River valley and plenty of open space to explore, it gives you that classic Alberta mountain backdrop while still feeling relaxed and natural.
And this location is extra special to me because it isn’t just somewhere I take my couples. It’s somewhere I love exploring myself.
Why Bighorn Lookout Is Special to Me
I visit Bighorn Lookout every year around the Spring Equinox. It’s become a bit of a personal tradition for me. It is a reason to get outside, explore Alberta and spend some time somewhere beautiful.
I’m always looking for new places to photograph, and Bighorn Lookout quickly became one of my favourites.
In fact, I even chose Bighorn Lookout for some of my own wedding photos!
So when I recommend this location to my couples, it’s not because it’s simply a pretty backdrop. It’s a place I genuinely love and return to year after year.
One important thing to know when planning your session is that Bighorn Lookout is only accessible from approximately May through December. The area is seasonally closed during the winter months, so this is one to keep in mind for late spring, summer and fall engagement sessions.
Why Choose Bighorn Lookout for Your Engagement Session?
The views are incredible – This is probably the obvious one.
Bighorn Lookout has beautiful views over the Sheep River valley and surrounding mountains, giving us that big Alberta landscape you’ve probably been dreaming about. But we don’t have to spend the entire session standing in front of the same view! We can explore the area, find different backdrops and mix those big landscape photos with close-up, intimate moments.
We’ll walk around, explore, laugh, take in the views and stop whenever we find beautiful light. I’ll give you direction when you need it, but you don’t need to know how to pose or what to do in front of the camera. There are options to walk down toward the river as well, giving us another landscape and a completely different feel for your photos.
What You Should Know Before Booking
Bighorn Lookout is beautiful! The lookout is about a 5 minute walk from the parking lot. There is no cell service.
It is not wheelchair accessible, and the path to the lookout can be rough and uneven. Because of this, it may not be the best location for anyone with significant mobility limitations.
There is a bathroom (outhouse) at the parking lot!
Bighorn Lookout is part of Kananaskis, and requires a Kananskis Conservation Pass (and business license for photographers!)
What Should You Wear?
Because we’re in the mountains, I recommend outfits that feel a little elevated but are still comfortable enough to walk and explore in.
Some of my favourite options include:
- Flowy dresses or skirts
- Neutral and earthy tones
- Layers for changing Alberta weather
- Comfortable shoes you can walk in
- A second outfit if you’d like more variety

When Should We Take Bighorn Lookout Engagement Photos?
Golden hour is one of my favourite times for engagement sessions here. The softer evening light can create beautiful warmth across the mountains and valley.
That said, Alberta weather is unpredictable. I’m not afraid of a little cloud cover or wind. Sometimes dramatic skies make the photos even better! The location is especially beautiful through the summer and fall, with each season bringing something a little different to the landscape.
