7 Tips for Planning a Winter Wedding in Alberta

March 11, 2026

There’s something incredibly magical about winter weddings in Alberta. Snow-covered mountains, soft snowfall, and cozy candlelit receptions create a romantic atmosphere that feels straight out of a winter fairytale.

If you’re dreaming of a winter wedding in the Canadian Rockies, here are a few tips to help you plan the perfect snowy celebration.

1. Plan Around Shorter Daylight Hours

Winter days in Alberta are much shorter than summer.

In December and January, sunset can be as early as 4:30 PM, which means planning your ceremony earlier in the afternoon is important if you want natural light for photos.

Many couples choose a ceremony around 1:30–2:00 PM to allow time for portraits before sunset.

2. Choose a Venue With Indoor + Outdoor Options

Winter weather in Alberta can be unpredictable. One day may be sunny and calm, while the next brings a snowstorm.

Choosing a venue with both indoor and outdoor options allows flexibility for photos and your ceremony.

Some beautiful winter wedding venues in the Rockies include:

  • Emerald Lake Lodge
  • Castle Mountain Resort
  • The Malcolm Hotel in Canmore
  • Buffalo Mountain Lodge in Banff

These venues offer stunning winter views while still providing cozy indoor spaces.

3. Dress for the Weather

Winter wedding fashion can be both stylish and practical.

Some ideas couples love:

  • Faux fur shawls or capes
  • Long-sleeve wedding dresses
  • Elegant winter boots for portraits
  • Wool suits or layered tuxedos

These pieces keep you warm while adding beautiful texture to your photos.

4. Consider Snowy Photo Locations

Snow transforms the Rocky Mountains into an incredible backdrop.

Some of my favourite winter photo locations include:

  • Lake Louise (all of the photos in this blog post!)
  • Two Jack Lake
  • Moraine Lake Road
  • Kananaskis viewpoints

Fresh snowfall creates soft light and dreamy landscapes that photograph beautifully.

5. Build Extra Time Into Your Timeline

Winter conditions can slow travel times, especially in the mountains.

I always recommend allowing extra time for:

  • Driving between locations
  • Putting on winter gear
  • Walking through snow

This keeps the day relaxed and stress-free.

6. Embrace Winter Decor

Winter weddings look stunning with cozy seasonal elements.

Popular winter decor ideas include:

  • Evergreen garlands
  • Candlelit tables
  • Warm wood accents
  • Soft neutral florals

These elements complement the snowy landscape perfectly.

7. Don’t Be Afraid of Snow!

Many couples worry about snowfall, but snow actually makes wedding photos even more magical!

Soft falling snow creates a romantic atmosphere that feels straight out of a movie; and often results in some of the most memorable images of the day.
